Naomi and Ruth Kapembe, 17-year-old twins of Libuyu Compound in Livingstone town, have been on a remarkable journey with Response Network under the sponsorship program since 2020. Back then, their family faced tough times, especially concerning school fees for the twins and their siblings. Their parents sought help from Response Network, which stepped in to support their education.
Their sponsorship began when they were both in Grade 9 at St. Mary’s Secondary School. After writing their Grade 9 exams, Ruth moved to Linda Secondary School, where she completed her Grade 12, while Naomi remained at St. Mary’s Secondary School until Grade 12. Response Network paid for their school fees and provided all necessary school requirements until they completed their secondary education in 2023. This support lifted a heavy burden from their family’s shoulders and allowed the twins to focus on their studies without worrying about school fees.
Their Grade 12 results were out early this year, and their hard work paid off; they both performed well. Naomi scored 6 points, and Ruth scored 18. Happy with their results, they have both started applying for university. Naomi and Ruth both wish to study medicine; Naomi wants to specialize in Neurology, and Ruth in Gynecology.
Naomi is currently volunteering as a teacher at a small pre-school near her home before she goes to university. This experience has not only boosted Naomi’s confidence but also ignited her passion for helping others. Their ambitions extend beyond personal success to making a positive impact on their community.
Beyond academic success, the Kapembe family’s living conditions have improved. Due to the reduced financial strain of not paying school fees for the twins, their parents managed to save money and have built a new, big four-roomed house. This accomplishment has inspired other families in Libuyu Compound.
Their mother expressed overwhelming gratitude, stating, “Our lives have improved significantly since Response Network began sponsoring the twins.”
Their story shows how support for education can transform a family and bring hope for a brighter tomorrow.
