Response Network runs a sponsorship program for more than 900 orphaned girls and the major donor is Academic Work. We have planned home visitations every month as part of our monitoring system. We visit these homes so that we have a detailed story of the child’s life when she is out of school. Below is the profile of Beatrice Samachemba.
Beatrice Samachemba is 14years old doing her 7th grade at Maranatha Adventist School which is about 1.5km from her home in Dambwa site and service compound. Beatrice is a single orphan being kept by her mother. She lost her father 4years ago, she is the first born in a family of 2. The mother is 34 years old. The mother got married to another man but they are on separation, so the little money that this man gives her is what she uses to pay rent and feed her two children, she has no other source of income to support her 2 children. They are paying K75 rent for the one room that they are renting. One can tell that life is not easy for this family, the room has one window which is partially locked and they have no electricity. This house is supposed to be occupied by one family but it has been demarcated into 5 households.
There is no water supply at this house as the water was disconnected by the utility company due to outstanding bills. So they fetch water from the next house and they are charged K10 per month. The family only has 2 meals a day, the first meal is at 11am and the next and last meal of the day is at 4pm. Academically Beatrice’s performance is fair and the mother is so much concerned about her daughter’s education.
